Understanding Physics and Construction are Vital in Demolition

Understanding Physics and Construction are Vital in Demolition

When demolishing a building or other structure, it’s important for the demolition contractor to first understand how it was constructed. The way in which foundations, frames, floors, beams, walls, roofs, etc., tie in to each other usually dictates the approach in which the building can be safely demolished. Smart demolition team members will often do an exploratory check by opening walls, ceilings, or other areas to help ensure a safe demolition process, and to check that there aren't any unforseen issues that could inhibit demolition in any way.

All demolition projects should be carefully planned. These plans should thoroughly detail the demolition approach, tools and equipment that will be used, and manpower requirements, and it is imperative that these needs are present onsite. Spontaneous or uninformed improvisation is a big no-no in demolition.

A good understanding of physics is a “must” for demolition contractors. Weight, shear, bending moment, load types, etc., are just a few of the essential parts of the demolition of buildings or other structures. The requirements and complexity of the demolition industry, along with our understanding of the need to be flexible and resourceful in project approaches are the areas where R. Baker & Son meets and excels in separating ourselves apart from our competitors.

R. Baker & Son’s commitment to maintaining safe projects is unequaled in our industry, placing the safety of our employees and clients as our top priority. All personnel, from top management through field staff, are thoroughly and continuously trained in safety procedures.  As a result, R.
