Grain Silo & Equip. Installation: R Baker's 4-Week Project

Heavy equipment rigging during the installation of a new grain silo and processing system by R Baker.

R Baker recently completed a challenging and unique grain processing installation, involving the heavy equipment rigging and industrial equipment installation of four 70-foot process grain silos, an 80-foot truck scale installation, and a 50-foot dual-purpose truck loading platform installation. This complex industrial project required precision assembly of numerous components, much like constructing a massive erector set, to create a fully operational grain storage, weighing, and delivery system. Our expertise in turnkey industrial solutions ensured seamless integration from start to finish.

Strategic Approach to Industrial Grain System Installation
Our team approached this grain silo installation project methodically, working from the inside out. The process began with carefully matching and assembling all components for the four large grain silos, including external accessories, ladders, supports, and interconnecting bracing systems. Each silo was positioned with laser precision by our expert millwright services team to meet exact specifications for this critical food processing equipment upgrade.

Following silo installation, we moved to the 80-foot extended tanker truck weigh scale with its operator station. After proper positioning, the scale underwent comprehensive testing and calibration to meet manufacturer tolerances. The final major component was the 50-foot process tanker loading platform, strategically positioned over the weigh scale.

Multi-Level Platform Integration
The loading platform featured three distinct levels, each serving specific functions:

± Dust collection systems
± Filtration equipment
± Tanker delivery operations

A utility pipe rack was also installed to route all utility and product piping from the main building to the new silos and delivery platform, ensuring seamless integration with existing operations.

Precision Through BIM Coordination
Every component required laser-precise installation to meet exact tolerances established through Building Information Modeling (BIM) coordination. This precision was critical because all product piping and delivery systems arrived pre-fabricated for rapid on-site installation.

Overcoming Supply Chain Challenges
The project encountered significant hardware supply issues when incorrect components—nuts, bolts, washers, couplings, and interconnecting hardware intended for another vendor's project—were mistakenly shipped to our site. This discovery during mid-assembly threatened to halt progress on an already aggressive timeline.

Baker's purchasing manager collaborated with our millwrights to compile an accurate material and hardware inventory. After locating the required materials, we arranged immediate packaging and pickup. Several custom components with extended lead times posed additional challenges, but we successfully partnered with a local metal fabricator who provided rapid turnaround on these critical pieces.

Quality Assurance and Project Completion
Upon completion of all heavy equipment rigging, our team conducted a comprehensive walkthrough with the manufacturer's engineer. We addressed all identified issues and implemented requested modifications the following day, enabling mechanical and electrical contractors to begin their work immediately.

The owner's aggressive four-week operational deadline drove every aspect of this project, requiring the new storage and delivery system to be fully operational for product delivery to market within this compressed timeframe. Through careful coordination, problem-solving, and strategic partnerships, Baker successfully delivered this complex installation on schedule.
