R. Baker & Son: Rigging Safety Guidelines

R. Baker & Son: Rigging Safety Guidelines

According to OSHA, a significant number of construction accidents are crane-related, and most could have been prevented with proper safety measures.  Safety is R. Baker & Son’s #1 priority, and we strictly observe proper rigging safety procedures on every lift we do, which is why we have an exemplary safety record that is second to none.

Guidelines for rigging safety:

 1. Inspect the condition of your equipment on a daily basis.  Check cables for kinks or worn or broken wires, and slings and straps for fraying or cuts.  Hooks, shackles, and pins should not be bent, and metal should not show corrosion, cracks, or excessive wear.  Any equipment showing damage, no matter how slight, must be immediately removed from service.

 2. Know your equipment, and use it properly: equipment and accessories should be selected based on precise load size and weight analyses and calculations.  There is no room for error in rigging; if a load doesn’t meet the safe capacity, don’t make the lift.

 3. Develop an approved pick plan where required and whenever possible.  Determine whether a tagline is necessary, especially where clearances are limited.

 4. Check slings and connections: Before lifting, remove slack from slings and watch for sharp or jagged edges that may damage the sling.  Ensure that connection points are tight and secure.

 5. Position cranes on stable ground and make sure the area is sufficient to accommodate the crane outriggers, and the load.

 6. Take precautions when there are high winds, and be prepared for sudden gusts.  If winds exceed or threaten to exceed safe limits, do not make the lift.

 7. Designate team leaders and signal persons, and assign specific roles to team members taking part in the lift.

 8. Crane operators should first lift a load a few inches to make sure it is properly balanced and secured and the equipment is functioning properly.

 9. Loads should be moved smoothly over the planned route, with no sudden movements. When necessary, riggers use taglines to control a load and prevent spinning from a safe distance.

R. Baker & Son’s expert team includes master riggers, professional engineers, and skilled rigging tradesman capable of handling even the most challenging and complex rigging projects.  We provide clients with a full selection of rigging services including rigging of heavy equipment and machinery, sensitive pharmaceutical and manufacturing equipment, rigging and dismantling of equipment and process lines, equipment salvage and removal, match marking, reinstallation, and millwrighting.
