Machinery Moving and Assembly Project

Machinery moving, assembly project, used conveyor system

A manufacturer was referred to R. Baker & Son for help with a plant expansion project. A used conveyor system was being added to their production line connecting several newly-leased pieces of equipment.

The conveyors were purchased as-is from a surplus equipment supplier, sight unseen with only photos provided, and the dimensions given by the seller were very basic. No shop drawings, 3D models, or instructions were supplied. The owners had purchased the used conveyor system to save money and avoid an 18-month lead time for new equipment. Baker’s challenge was to install the conveyors so they worked seamlessly with the new equipment while the rest of the facility remained in operation.

The Baker team consisted of three senior mechanics, two apprentices, and two millwrights with extensive experience assembling and installing conveyor systems. The forty-six conveyors arrived on several tractor-trailers and were moved into the building for precise measurement and assessment.  Our rigging team had previously set the new equipment to which the conveyors would be connected into the approximate area in which they would be permanently installed. The exact placement would be determined according to the conveyor layout.

Once R. Baker & Son had developed a plan, we match-marked the individual belt and screw conveyors and used several 2-ton forklifts to maneuver them roughly into place. The conveyors were then thoroughly, cleaned, and lubricated, and small repairs were made throughout. Next, we had to determine how to assemble and connect the conveyors. Many of the nuts, bolts, washers, plates, and miscellaneous parts were missing, so the Baker team had to establish what was needed and obtain the new stainless-steel items locally.

With the conveyors reconditioned and the layout devised, it was time to set everything in place. The Baker team used lasers to set the critical lines and carefully connected the various conveyor sections to the large equipment they would service. Power was provided to the motors, which were then bumped and checked for rotation to make sure all of the conveyors were working properly. In the end, the used conveyor system worked like new and the customer was very pleased with the time and money they’d saved.
