Expert Rigging and Maintenance for Industrial Mixing Tanks

16,000-gallon mixing tanks, each with an 18-ft agitator with a 3-inch shaft

A new client reached out to R. Baker for rigging services, regarding a challenging issue affecting their production and throughput. We were referred by an engineer with whom we had worked in the past, who was now the resident engineer for the client. The company was working with a new product which required different agitators for mixing in their holding tanks. The challenge was in removing the old agitators, which had to be cut out as they were one-piece solid shafts and could not be lifted straight out of the tanks.

There were four 16,000-gallon mixing tanks, each with an 18-ft agitator with a 3-inch shaft. Using confined space procedures and entering through the manways, we cut the agitators at specific points to allow removal from the upper and/or lower manway openings.

The new agitators were designed with sanitary couplings to be assembled in pieces within the tank using scaffolding. The new 20-hp motors were installed on top of the tank, coupled to the new agitators. Working with the agitator manufacturer, we needed to completely test each agitator at various speeds, especially as these agitators had no steady bearing at the bottom. Everything was properly torqued with slight adjustments made to ensure steady operation.

Before liquid was installed in the tanks, the rigging team assisted with installing all new gasketing and stainless bolts on the manways, as well as replacement of instruments, including temperature and level transmitters. We also installed new tank LED lights with cameras. The tanks were completely refurbished and ready for their new operation. Once the new agitators have had three months of successful operation, the next four tanks will undergo renovation.

If you're in need of rigging services in NJ, NY or the surrounding region, R Baker is equipped to handle your most demanding industrial challenges.
