Clean Projects Keep an Eye on the Environment

Clean Projects Keep an Eye on the Environment

Whenever a manufacturing plant, processing facility, building, refinery, or industrial plant undergoes demolition, dismantling, decommissioning, or relocation, there will invariably be hazardous chemicals, substances and materials to contend with, as well as recyclable and/or salvageable materials.  These materials and contaminants must be identified early on and method of disposal, remediation, decontamination, and recovery must be meticulously planned.

During the planning stage, R. Baker & Son works closely with client, EHS personnel in particular, to determine what substances and materials may be encountered, and where.  A thorough site assessment follows to specifically test and identify all chemicals, fluids, and materials.  Aged facilities can hold unexpected surprises in old, abandoned pipes and tanks.  Once all contaminants are identified, a remediation plan is developed that encompasses scheduling, regulatory reporting, abatement, remediation, and disposal.
Refrigerants, hydraulic fluids, and glycols must be reclaimed from equipment and mechanical systems. Fluids must be safely recovered from tanks, columns, vessels, and pipelines before they can be flushed, decontaminated or removed.  HVAC and other ducts may contain accumulated debris that must be properly removed.  Asbestos requires careful abatement as do lead-painted surfaces and fixtures, and PCBs may also be present.  If equipment and machinery are being relocated to a different facility, DOT regulations require that certain fluids be removed prior to transport.

Demolition debris that can be recycled must be sorted either onsite, or sent to an offsite sorting facility. Recyclable materials can include metal, brick, concrete, cardboard, plastic, wood, glass, gypsum carpet, and insulation.  Old ballasts and fluorescent lighting must be recovered and properly handled.  R. Baker & Son is 100% LEED complaint, and ensures that clients will receive all available points on projects that qualify.
